What is it?

The web is a grand resource, connecting millions to a Mecca of creativity, information sharing and collaboration.  Online, you can find resources and services to carry out virtually any activity including chatting, social networking, shopping, gaming, publishing, file-sharing and teleconferencing.  However, when used improperly, it poses a mishmash of dangers – running the gamut from sexual predators, viruses, to fraud and online harassment.

Understanding how the Internet operates is your first defence against online threats.  The Internet is essentially an open, worldwide network of computers designed for the free flow of information.  By connecting to the Internet, you open the door for others to connect to your computer.  As an ungoverned system however, you run the risk of unauthorized access to your confidential data and exposure to malware caught in the current of information passing through the Internet.

Protecting children from cyber threats requires an ongoing and collective effort of youth, parents, teachers, law enforcement, political leaders and educators.
