Ah, summer vacation! School’s out, the sun is shining and you are class free until the fall semester starts—life is good. Yet between the road trips, pool parties and barbeques, you feel the need to do more.
If you find yourself looking for something meaningful to do with your new-found free time, why not consider volunteering? Not only will it get you out of the house, it can also be fun and fulfilling. If you need some inspiration or ideas on where to start, consider one of the options below.
From reading to the little ones or even helping with adult literacy programs, volunteers are always welcomed and appreciated at public libraries. This is a great way to give back to the community, especially since you have been blessed with the gift of education. Whether you are assigned to tutor a local youth or simply help another learn to read, volunteering your time at a library is a rewarding experience for everyone involved.
If you have an inner animal lover in you, you might consider dedicating your time and efforts to an area animal shelter. Depending on your preference and comfort level, you can usually specify what specific breeds and species with which you want to interact. From giving them baths, feeding them and even introducing them to potential new owners, you’re sure to have lots to do. Plus, you even get to play with them! So, if you’ve got a soft spot for all creatures and want to make a difference, consider volunteering with your local animal shelter.
From sorting and serving food, to assisting with administrative tasks and other programs, volunteers are a vital asset to any food bank’s operations. Seeking to reduce poverty and hunger, the food bank’s mission is an important one. Program organizers strive to spread awareness throughout the community and, as a volunteer, you can be a part of that. As much or as little as your schedule allows, your efforts are welcomed.
So, the next time you find yourself bored on a lazy summer afternoon, consider helping out at one of these entities—you won’t regret it.
