Ludacris’ New Song Soft-sells Sexting
March 11th, 2010 by Rosemina Nazarali
Rapper, Ludacris, has never been one to back down from controversy and his new album, ‘Battle of the Sexes’ has quite a few people talking. One song in particular, ‘Sexting,’ has the Internet aflutter with comments about the song’s lyrics.
Poking fun at Tiger Woods’ indiscretions, the song entitled ‘Sexting,’ is about a man whose girlfriend catches him sending out sexually explicit text messages. “So I’m getting treated for my sex addiction in my private clinic,” Ludacris raps. “And I need you to be sensitive about my condition.”
However, Ludacris says the song wasn’t meant to satirize Tiger Woods’ situation, but to make fun of himself. “These people are all sending pictures over the Internet to one another… sending messages with sexual innuendos in them; things of that nature – I feel like everyone’s doing that.” Ludacris says, adding that he isn’t exactly new to the world of sexting. “Of course I do it myself, so of course I’m making light of reality.”
But the rapper didn’t let Tiger out of the woods that easily, adding that Tiger is a definite “motivator” for the song since he is “the face of sexting right now.”
While “making light of reality,” is Ludacris sending out a message to his younger and much more impressionable fans that sexting is acceptable? Although he is mentioning consequences such as sex rehab, his tone and nonchalant attitude is turning a pretty heavy situation into something that can be dismissed with a quick shoulder shrug. In the meantime, sexting has become an epidemic among teens, with many being accused and charged with child pornography.
Kiwi Commons is currently in talks with Donny Claxton of www.daddyclaxton.com, Doreen Nicastro, a Social Media Strategist & Networlding Facilitator of Nicastro Consultants, and Karen Rayne, an adolescent sexuality expert, to discuss the possibility of working with Ludacris in order to discourage the sending of sexual messages and the dangers thereof.
So what’s your say? Is mainstream pop culture encouraging kids to engage in these sexually explicit messages?
