YouTube’s New Parental Controls Explained

In order to provide a safer, more controlled experience for viewers, YouTube recently announced an opt-in Safety Mode.
As a form of parental control, YouTube’s Safety Mode helps control the type of content you want to view on the site, including the filtering of videos that contain potentially objectionable material (like sex, violence and profanity).
By setting these controls, it also stops other users (like your kids) from changing the Safety Mode settings of that particular browser. So once Safety Mode is locked, it will remain on even after you sign out. If your child tries to turn the safe settings off, it will refer them to your YouTube account info as the administrator.
Here’s a video on how YouTube’s Safety Mode works:
Step-by-Step Guide to Setting Safety Mode
1) Sign in to YouTube (click here to sign up)
2) Click on “Safety Mode is off” at the very bottom of any YouTube.com page
3) Click ‘On”
4) Click ‘Save’
Parents should note that YouTube’s Safety Mode works on a first-come-first-serve basis, so if your child also has a YouTube account, they may have already claimed Safety Mode authority. Also, if you are using multiple browsers on your computer (like Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome), double check the settings on each browser to make sure Safety Mode is still on.
While YouTube’s Safety Mode isn’t 100 percent foolproof, it’s a great way to help protect kids from objectionable content. In conjunction with Safety Mode, Kiwi experts recommend teaching your kids how to use YouTube’s community flagging and blocking feature to help them guard against inappropriate content and contact.
One key thing to remember is what is objectionable to your family may not be objectionable to community platforms like YouTube, so never leave a child unattended at a computer. And, if you don’t know what they’re doing, just ask.
