Kiwi to Lead Internet Safety Workshops at the First Annual Crime Stoppers Symposium
February 3rd, 2010 by Kiwi Commons
Kiwi Commons staff are proud to announce that they will be leading Internet safety workshops at the first annual Crime Stoppers of York Region Symposium, this February 11, 2010 at The Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts.
The symposium, hosted by Crime Stoppers of York Region in partnership with the York Region District School Board and York Catholic District School Board, aims to bring together youths to deliberate on strategies for fostering safe and supportive learning environments for student bodies and faculties. Key items on the agenda include issues concerning social responsibility and “Breaking the Code of Silence.”
The day of events will kick off with opening ceremonies and keynote speakers by Youth Speak. Following suit will be a series of student workshops led by the likes of Crime Stoppers, Kiwi Seminars & Kiwi Commons, The York Centre, Mother’s Against Drunk Driving (M.A.D.D.), and the York Regional Police.
Kiwi Commons staff will be conducting a two-part workshop, the first of which will focus on the importance of Internet safety. This workshop will introduce students to identifying online risks, while providing them with strategies on how to stay safe online. The second workshop will focus on the pervasive problem of cyberbullying among students and will discuss ways to identify and address the issue, as well as where to find help and report it.
By hosting workshops at this year’s symposium, Kiwi Commons hopes to bring students and teachers into a constructive and proactive dialogue, leading to more school-wide awareness programs and prevention initiatives.
