Facebook to Install Panic Button

December 8th, 2009 by Kiwi Commons

Panic!

Facebook is the latest of 140 websites to install a ‘panic’ button, which allows users to report inappropriate content and online harassment. Facebook stated the safety of its users is “top priority” and has joined with police forces in the UK and worldwide in an effort to make online experiences safer.

The new button is part of an effort to encourage Internet safety and awareness. Upon clicking the button, users will be able to access advice and support from CEOP along with nine other online help resources including Childline and Beatbullying.

Created by the UK Council for Child Internet Safety (UKCCIS) and the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP), the button is finding its way on other social networking websites including Bebo – considered the worst of online social networks for cyberbullying.

The button comes on the heels of Facebook’s announcement to form a “Facebook Safety Advisory Board – a group of five Internet safety organizations that will counsel the company on all issues related to online safety. The board members will review Facebook’s current safety-related procedures and documentation, as well as offer suggestions regarding best practices and other procedures for moving forward.

This is a good move because it will give people a visible reminder that they don't and shouldn't tolerate bullying.
