At What Age should a Child have a Cell Phone?

Technology is everywhere you turn. It’s waiting for you at work, it’s in your living room at home and it can now follow you inbetween on your belt in the form of a smartphone. This is great for savvy adults but what about for kids? At what age should they be exposed to this level of technology?
Chances are your child already has a computer to access the internet in your living room, home office, local library and even school, but what about access to a cell phone?
According to Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association stats (2008), two-thirds (65%) of Canadians aged 16-17 have a cell phone, and 30% of kids between the ages of 13 to 15 do too.
If the growing trend is to have a cell-only household, which has increased 20% from 2006 to 2008 in Canada (Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association), what choice do you have but to give your child access to a cell phone?
Companies in the England are even creating phones for young children including one called i-kids for about $230.00, which just so happens to be in the shape of Mickey Mouse.
With the release of Wifi and 3G networks, children can access the internet everywhere, depending on their cell and phone plan, not including if they have a laptop or game console.
So what age is too young and what level of technology is too much?
